Full lips and cheeks and shapely eyelids and eyebrows create a youthful appearance of the central face. Study the pictures of children and young adults to see the distribution of fat of the central facial features. Dr. Adamson performs expert facial fat grafting as a lone procedure or in combination with other procedures to restore the youthful volume of the central face.
The first step in facial augmentation with fat grafts is to harvest the fat grafts using liposuction techniques. The fat is rinsed to purify the fat grafts. The purified fat grafts are then injected through tiny needle punctures in the skin (no incisions) with a syringe, through a tiny blunt tipped cannula in multiple layers into the treatment areas to achieve the desired shape and contour. Fat deposits of the abdomen, inner knees and thighs make the best donor sites for the fat graft harvesting.
The transferred fat is a graft-meaning it will grow a new blood supply at the recipient site and survive there long-term. Fat graft survival is very dependent on the technique used and the experience of the Plastic Surgeon. I expect about 60% of the fat to survive permanently. Survival in the lips is lower at about 20% because of movement (talking, smiling, eating). I usual over-graft to compensate for expected fat loss/absorption.
The procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia or as an outpatient in the accredited surgery center under general anesthesia performed by the anesthesia team. Bruising and swelling usually last 1-3 weeks.

Buttock augmentation with silicone buttock implants is preferable in those leaner individuals who want a more shapely figure, but do not have donor sites for harvesting fat grafts. The silicone implant is placed into the buttock under the fascia (layer of tissue covering the muscle) or under the muscle depending upon your anatomy and goals for augmentation. The access incision is concealed in the gluteal cleft between the buttocks.
The procedures are performed as an outpatient in the accredited surgery center under general anesthesia performed by the anesthesia team. It is usually recommended to take 2-3 weeks off of work to recover, depending upon your occupation. Avoid or minimize sitting for several weeks.
